How do I wash my hair extensions?

How to Wash Your Luxy Hair Extensions

Luxy Hair extensions are made with 100% Remy human hair, which means they can be washed, styled, and treated just like your natural hair. But since they don’t get natural scalp oils, they don’t need to be washed as often.

How Often Should You Wash Them?

Wash your extensions only when they feel heavy, sticky, or hard to style — this usually means there’s product buildup.

General rule: Wash after every 30 wears or once a month.

What You’ll Need

  • A large bowl or clean sink
  • Alcohol and sulfate-free shampoo + conditioner
When selecting your products, we recommend avoiding products that are advertised as "bond-building", or as containing keratin and other proteins. These products may cause protein overload, leading to breakage and tangling.
  • Deep conditioner or hair mask
  • Hair oil
  • Wide-tooth comb or Wet Brush

Step-by-Step: How to Wash Your Extensions

1. Brush Before Washing

Gently brush your extensions while dry to remove tangles. Never brush them wet (unless 90% dry). Stack the wefts neatly to avoid tangling.

2. Prep Your Wash Station

Use a clean bowl or plugged sink. Fill with lukewarm water (never hot — it dries out the hair). Mix in 2–3 pumps of your sulfate-free shampoo.

3. Shampoo Gently

Wash each weft one at a time, holding it at the top and gently swishing it through the soapy water. Avoid rubbing or scrubbing. Rinse and lay flat on a towel.

4. Condition Deeply

Apply conditioner generously from top to ends of each weft. Let sit for 5–10 minutes, then rinse thoroughly.

For a deep condition, apply a Hair Mask, bundle all wefts together, and leave in a shower cap overnight. Rinse thoroughly in the morning to remove all the product
7. Air Dry Flat

Squeeze out excess water (don’t rub!) and lay the wefts flat on a towel. Use a microfiber towel to help reduce frizz and damage.

Add a few drops of hair oil to each weft while damp for added shine and softness.
8. Dry Carefully

Allow the hair to air-dry, or use a blow dryer.

If blow-drying, always use:

  • Heat protectant spray
  • A cool setting
  • A downward motion
Blow-dry the root first, then work your way down. Only brush once the hair is 90% dry to prevent breakage
9. Comb Gently

Once hair is dry, use a wide-tooth comb or Luxy Loop Brush to detangle each weft from bottom to top.

FAQs

Do I need to wash my Luxies before wearing them? Nope! They’re sanitized and ready to wear right out of the box.

What kind of shampoo and conditioner should I use? Look for alcohol-free and sulfate-free formulas made for dry or damaged hair. Ingredients like argan oil, coconut oil, or castor oil are amazing for moisture.

Do I need to wash them after curling? Not unless you’ve used a lot of product. You can just brush out the curls and re-style with heat as needed

Do they dry straight? Since Luxy Hair extensions are made from 100% human hair, they may dry with a slight natural wave. You can use heat tools to straighten or curl them, just like your own hair. For heatless waves, try air-drying them in braids overnight!
