Dyeing Do's & Don'ts

Can You Dye or Tone Luxy Hair Extensions?

If you have a unique hair color that does not match any Luxy shade, no worries. Luxy Hair extensions are made with 100% remy human hair, which means they can be dyed darker or toned by a professional hair colorist.

What Is Remy Human Hair?

Remy hair is the highest-quality human hair because the cuticles are kept intact and aligned in the same direction. This process keeps the extensions:

  • Soft
  • Shiny
  • Silky
  • Tangle-free

How to Safely Color Luxy Extensions

Dyeing or toning can slightly change the quality of your extensions, so it is important to follow best practices.

Classic vs. Seamless extensions:

Do’s

  • Do a test strand first
Apply color to a small one-clip weft before committing to the full set.
  • Use a professional colorist
Ideally, choose someone with experience working on extensions.
  • Pre-wash before coloring
Wash with a sulfate- and alcohol-free shampoo to remove the protective coating. Air dry before applying color.
  • Dye darker, not lighter
Always start with a lighter shade and go darker. Avoid lifting color with bleach.
  • Choose semi- or demi-permanent dye with a low developer
Use a 10 volume developer to deposit color without damaging the hair.
  • Apply color correctly
Saturate both sides of each weft. Apply in a downward motion only to avoid frizz and tangling.
  • Moisturize regularly
Deep condition after coloring and repeat bi-weekly with sulfate-free, hydrating products. Oils like argan, coconut, and castor oil are great options.

Don’ts

  • Do not dye the entire set at once
Dye each weft separately for control and even coverage.
  • Do not bleach
Luxies are pre-dyed during production, and bleach will damage them.
  • Do not use sulfates or drying alcohols
These strip oils, dry the hair, and fade color faster.
  • Do not use high-volume developer
Higher volumes lift color and damage the extensions.
  • Do not use box dye at home
Drugstore dyes lack control over developer strength and can cause damage.
  • Do not overwash
Washing too often fades color and dries out extensions.
  • Do not apply purple shampoo directly
This can cause patchiness and tangling. Always test on a one-clip weft first.

Can I Tone Extensions Myself with Purple Shampoo?

We recommend professional toning for best results. If you choose to use purple shampoo:

  • Test on a one-clip weft first.
  • It works best on Ash Blonde and Platinum Blonde to neutralize warm undertones.
  • It is not recommended for Dirty Blonde, as results may be uneven or subtle.

For a major color adjustment, professional toning is the best option.

Return Policy on Dyed or Toned Extensions

Please note: dyeing or toning is done at the customer’s discretion.

  • Once extensions have been dyed, toned, or treated with color-depositing products, they are not eligible for return or exchange.
  • Extensions damaged by bleaching also cannot be returned or refunded.
