How to tone Luxy Hair extensions

Toning Luxy Hair Extensions: What You Need to Know

Luxy Hair extensions are made with 100% Remy human hair, which means they can be toned by a professional colorist. This makes it easy to adjust your set to better match your hair color.

Can all Luxy extensions be dyed or toned?

To preserve the curl pattern of your Curly Ponytail Extension, we don’t recommend washing, dyeing, toning or bleaching it, as this will cause the curl pattern to loosen.

What does Remy human hair mean?

Remy hair is the highest quality human hair used for extensions. The cuticles are kept intact and aligned in the same direction, which ensures the hair stays:

  • Soft and silky
  • Naturally shiny
  • Tangle-free throughout its lifespan

Luxy Hair only uses carefully sorted, 100% Remy hair. [See how and where our extensions are made here.]

Best Practices for Toning Extensions

Do’s
  • Test strand first: Apply toner to a one-clip weft before coloring the full set.
  • Pre-wash gently: Use a sulfate- and alcohol-free shampoo to remove the protective coating. Wash one weft at a time and air dry before toning.
  • Work with a professional: Always choose a colorist experienced with extensions.
  • Apply toner correctly: Saturate both sides of each weft, moving downward only.
  • Deep condition after toning: Use moisturizing, sulfate-free products like hair masks or oils to restore hydration.
Don’ts
  • Tone all wefts together: This leads to tangling and uneven results.
  • Use bleach: Extensions are pre-dyed and bleaching will damage the hair.
  • Use sulfates or drying alcohols: These strip moisture and fade color.
  • DIY with drugstore toner: The peroxide-to-pigment balance is tricky—incorrect use can cause dryness and damage.
  • Apply purple shampoo directly: Extensions are porous and can absorb unevenly. Always dilute in warm water first.

Can I tone at home with purple shampoo?

Some customers use diluted purple shampoo to cool down Ash Blonde or Bleach Blonde shades. Keep in mind:

  • Results vary depending on your blonde tone.
  • Dirty Blonde may only reduce brassiness, not turn fully cool-toned.
  • For a precise match, professional toning is the best option.
We recommend using the Balancing Purple Shampoo

How to Tone Your Luxy Hair Extensions with Purple Shampoo

What you will need
  • Sulfate-free & alcohol-free purple shampoo
  • A sink or deep bowl/container
  • Sulfate-free & alcohol-free conditioner
  1. Pre-wash with sulfate- and alcohol-free shampoo
  • Fill a sink with lukewarm water and add 2–3 pumps of gentle shampoo.
  • Wash one weft at a time (1-clip wefts can be grouped together).
  • Hold the weft at the base, submerge it, and gently swish—avoid rubbing to prevent tangles.
  • Air-dry completely before toning.
  1. Prepare your toning bath
  • Use a deep bowl or sink with warm water to help the hair absorb color.
  • Dilute your purple shampoo until the water reaches a vibrant purple. Make sure the shampoo is fully dissolved.
  1. Test a 1-clip weft first
  • Dip a pre-washed, air-dried weft into the water for a few seconds to one minute.
  • Gently squeeze out excess water from base to ends.
  • Repeat dipping if you want a cooler, ashier tone—but avoid over-toning into a lilac shade.
  • Rinse with cold water, apply a sulfate- and alcohol-free conditioner for 5 minutes, then rinse again.
  • Air-dry the weft to see the final result before toning the rest of your extensions.
  1. Tone the remaining wefts
  • Repeat the same process for all wefts, one at a time.
  • Set aside completed wefts (no need to rinse yet).
  1. Refresh toning water as needed
  • The water will lighten as the hair absorbs color.
  • Add more shampoo and water as needed, dilute, and continue toning.
  1. Final rinse and conditioning
  • Once all wefts are toned, rinse each with cold water to seal the cuticle.
  • Apply a sulfate- and alcohol-free conditioner for 15 minutes, then rinse again with cold water.
  • Lay wefts flat and gently pat dry.
  • Wait until hair is 90% dry before brushing. Use fingers to loosen any tangles.
  • Optional: apply a small amount of hair oil to prevent frizz and keep the hair silky.

Over-toned or patchy extensions

Option 1: Use a clarifying shampoo to remove uneven color, then deep condition for 5–6 minutes (or overnight).

Option 2: Mix crushed vitamin C tablets or vitamin C powder with shampoo. Apply downward along the hair, wrap in cling wrap, leave for a couple of hours, then rinse. Follow with a sulfate-free deep conditioning treatment.
