How to Use a Sample Swatch (or the Tester Weft) to Match Your Hair

Using a sample swatch (or the tester weft from a set) can help you confidently check that a shade works well for you.
Sample Swatch
We offer sample swatches for all our beautiful shades. Our sample swatches are 8 inches in length and may be used for color matching purposes only. They do not need to be returned back to us after use. We also offer a full Luxy Color Ring that shows all our 36 shades.
Tester Weft
The tester weft is located on the top compartment of your Luxy Hair box.
This allows you to check the color against your natural hair without opening the sealed portion of the set, so you can easily exchange it if the shade isn’t the perfect match.
How to Match
1. Match to the mid-lengths and ends of your hair
For most Luxy extension sets, the color should be matched to the middle sections and ends of your hair, as this is where the extensions will blend.
Hold the sample swatch or tester weft underneath your hair and check how well it blends with your overall lengths and ends.
2. For Scalp Fill-Ins
If you purchased Scalp Fill-Ins, match the tester weft to your root area, since these are designed to blend near the scalp.
3. Check the length (tester weft)
For Clip-Ins sets, Thinning Fill-Ins, and Halos, the tester weft is part of the full set and shows the length of the extensions you ordered.
Your natural hair should be the same length or slightly longer than the tester weft for the most seamless blend.
Our sample swatches are for color matching purposes only and come in 8 inches. They do not show how long the actual set will be in your hair.
4. Check the color in different lighting
Lighting can change how color appears, so we recommend checking your match in a few environments:
- Indoor lighting
- Natural daylight near a window
- Outdoor lighting
This helps ensure the shade blends well in everyday conditions.
5. Look at the overall blend
When wearing extensions, your natural hair will sit on top of the extensions, so the most important thing is that the color blends nicely overall.
Even if the match isn’t identical strand-for-strand, the extensions can still look completely natural once clipped in.
6. Between two shades?
If you're deciding between two shades, we recommend choosing the lighter color.
A slightly lighter shade will usually blend beautifully and can look like natural highlights throughout your hair.
What if the Sample Swatch or Tester Weft Doesn’t Match?
No worries! If sample swatch does not match, please send a few photos of the sample swatch against your hair in natural light to info@luxyhair.com, and we're happy to make a color recommendation.
If the tester weft from your set is not an ideal match, exchanges are quick and easy.
As long as the main compartment of the set remains sealed, your order is eligible for a return or exchange.
