How do I choose the right Luxy Hair set?

Updated 1 month ago by Aleksandra

When choosing your weight, it's important to opt for a set that best matches your hair type, how much hair you have, and your haircut. For example, if you have lots of hair strands, a blunt haircut, or short hair you will need to consider a heavier weight to ensure there is a natural blend where your hair ends and the extensions begin.

How long does my hair need to be?

Clip-Ins

Your hair should be at least 6-7 inches long (which is around shoulder length). The reason why this is the recommended length is that your hair needs to be long enough in order for the clips to secure onto your hair sturdily, and to ensure that the clips don't show through your short hair.

Halo

Your hair should be below shoulder-length hair. We do not recommend Halo extensions for those with short hair as you will need more wefts and hair to create a seamless blend.

Ponytail Extension

Your hair should be long enough to tie into a bun or ponytail (either low, medium, or high). The most important thing to keep in mind is that there should be a bun or an existing ponytail that the Luxy Hair Ponytail Extension can attach to.

How do I find out what hair type I have?

Diameter of Hair Strands/Hair Strand Texture

The best place to start in determining your hair type is to begin by measuring the diameter of a single strand of hair. Take one strand of hair between your fingertips. Don’t feel anything? This is a sign of thin/fine hair. If you do feel the strand, your hair is of medium width, and if it feels thick or textured, your hair is likely thick/coarse.

Another strand test includes taking one single strand and laying it on a flat surface. If it’s barely visible, it is thin/fine. If it looks textured and thick, your hair is coarse. Anything in between is medium. Setting a single strand of hair next to a piece of thread can also help you gauge the diameter or width of your hair; if it’s about the same width, your hair is medium. If it is thicker than the thread, your hair is thick. Similarly, if it is thinner, your hair is thin/fine.

Hair Density/Thickness

People often confuse diameter and hair density to be one and the same. A person may have a thin strand width but have a thick amount of hair. Essentially, hair density refers to how much hair you actually have – the number of strands themselves and not how thick each one is. Thin diameter does not always equal thin density, nor does medium diameter equal medium density. More often than not, people will have differing densities and diameters.

The method to determining your hair density is simple; take a handful of hair from the front of your head and gently pull it to the side. Is a lot of your scalp visible between the bunches of strands? If so, this means you have thin density, if you can barely see your scalp at all, your hair’s density is thick. Anything in between is medium/average density.

What is the difference between all of the different weights?

Clip-Ins

All clip-in extensions are sold in a full set (9-10 wefts depending on the weight/set). The only difference between each set is the weight. The higher the grams, the more hair that is attached to each weft. The individual strands themselves will remain consistent in thickness.

Kindly note, the 16" Classic/Seamless Clip-Ins (140g) have the same density as the 20" Classic Clip-Ins (160g) but are less in weight due to the shorter length. Also, the 24" Clip-Ins (240g) are the same density as the 20" Classic Clip-Ins (220g) however, they are heavier due to the longer length.

Halo

Our Halo extensions are sold in a 3 piece set. The 16" Halo is the same density as the 20" Halo, however, it is less in weight due to the shorter length.

Our 20" Halo (180g) comes with a 10" wide weft that is 140 grams of hair. It comes with two bonus 2-clip wefts (20 grams each) to help blend in the hair that frames your face. Our 16" Halo (140g) comes with a 10" wide weft that is 110 grams of hair. The two bonus 2-clip wefts are 15 grams each.

What is a Volume Bundle & how do I know if I need it?

Volume Bundles include a full Luxy Hair set with a Volumizer Weft for maximum volume. If you have short hair, a blunt cut, or very thick hair you will need to opt for one. In some cases, if you have fine hair strands but a lot of them, a Volume Bundle will be better. Plus, they are also a great choice for anyone looking to add extra volume to their look!

What is the difference between the Classic and Seamless collections?

Seamless clip-in extensions are made with a thin silicone-based weft that lays flat against your head. To learn more and for a comparison chart between the two, please visit this helpful support article.

How do I choose between Clip-In and Halo extensions?

Halo extensions are best suited for those with a thin/medium hair type that is below shoulder length. If you have a lot of hair, short hair, a blunt cut or thick hair, you will need to consider our clip-in extensions instead to achieve a natural blend.

What length should I choose?

Clip-in Luxy Hair extensions are available in our 16" Classic and Seamless collections, as well as our standard 20" Classic and Seamless collections. We also offer a new 24" Classic collection! Our Halo extensions come in either 16 inches or 20 inches. Our Ponytail Extensions come in 16 inches or 20 inches.

Luxy Hair extensions will appear different in length on every person, as we all have different torso lengths. If you have a longer torso or are quite tall, Luxies will appear shorter on you. If you are more petite or have a shorter torso, they will appear longer on you.

In order to determine how long your extensions will be on you, we recommend measuring either 16, 20 or 24 inches down from the top of your ear with a measuring tape, as most wefts will be applied around the crown of your head. For Halo extensions, please measure from the crown of your head as the main weft will be applied here. For our Ponytail Extensions, click here to see how long they will be.

The good news is that all full sets of Luxies (excluding our Volumizer Wefts) come with a tester weft that can be used to determine if the length is a good match for you. If it isn’t an ideal match, we are more than happy to accommodate a return or exchange within 60 days. You can learn more about our return policy here.

Be sure to check out the below weight breakdowns if you are still unsure of which length/set will be best for your hair type.

I’m not sure which Halo set is best for me - how do I choose?

Halo extensions are best suited for those with hair longer than shoulder length and a thin to medium thickness hair type. If you have fine/medium strands but a lot of them, you will need to opt for a Halo Volume Bundle. For those with a thicker hair type, we recommend opting for our 20” Classic Clip-in Volume Bundle (265g).

Since our Halo extensions come in a standard 140g/180g thickness (depending on the length) it is not ideal for those with thicker or shorter hair types. It will likely appear "stringy" at the bottom if attempted to blend in these hair types.

16" 140g

This a medium-thickness set and it comes with 3 wefts (one Halo weft, and two 2-clips). It is the same density as our 20" Halo but it weighs less due to the shorter length.

This is an ideal set for you if you fit all the below points:

  • Hair strand texture: You have a thin or medium hair type
  • Hair density: You have an average amount of hair
  • Hair length: Your hair is medium to long in length
  • Hair cut: You have a tapered or layered haircut
  • Hair goals: You are looking to add natural volume to your hair
Do you have thick hair, a blunt haircut, or short hair? You will need to opt for our 16" Seamless Volume Bundle (180g).
Do you want to add even more volume to your hair? You can opt for our 16" Halo Volume Bundle (180g).
Do you have thin short hair and not a lot of it? You might be able to get away with a 16" Halo Volume Bundle (180g) instead of Clip-Ins. Feel free to contact us with some photos of your hair in natural lighting (where we can see it fully) and we'll be happy to provide you with our recommendation.
20" 180g

This a medium-thickness set and it comes with 3 wefts (one Halo weft and two 2-clips). It is the same density as our 16" Halo but it weighs more due to the longer length.

  • Hair strand texture: You have a thin or medium hair type
  • Hair density: You have an average amount of hair
  • Hair length: Your hair is medium to long in length
  • Hair cut: You have a tapered or layered haircut

Do you have thin short hair and not a lot of it? You might be able to get away with a 20" Halo Voume Bundle (225g) instead of Clip-Ins. Feel free to contact us with some photos of your hair in natural lighting (where we can see it fully) and we'll be happy to provide you with our recommendation.
