How to Revive Your Luxy Hair Extensions

Updated by Haven Whiteman

Life gets busy, and sometimes our hair care routine takes a back seat. If your Luxy Hair extensions are looking a little lackluster, feeling dry, or giving you more frizz than you bargained for, don't worry. You're not alone, and more importantly, your extensions are not beyond saving!

This guide walks you through the most common causes of dull, damaged, or unruly extensions, and exactly what to do to get them looking silky and gorgeous again.

Over-Washing Your Extensions

One of the most common mistakes we see is washing extensions too frequently. Unlike your natural hair, extensions don't receive oils from your scalp, so washing them too often strips away any moisture they do have, leaving them dry, brittle, and dull.

Signs you're over-washing:

  • Extensions feel stiff or "crunchy" after drying
  • Hair has lost its shine and looks flat
  • Increased shedding or tangling after wash

What to do:

  1. Wash less often. Extensions only need to be washed every 30–40 wears, or when there's significant product buildup. Your natural hair's oils won't travel down to the extensions, so there's no need to match your own wash schedule.
  2. Use a sulfate-free shampoo. Sulfates are harsh detergents that strip moisture. Choose a gentle, sulfate-free formula designed for color-treated or dry hair.
  3. Always condition. Apply a moisturizing conditioner from mid-length to ends, never on the bonds or clips, and leave it on for 2–5 minutes before rinsing.
  4. Deep condition monthly. Once a month, treat your extensions to a deep conditioning mask or hair oil treatment to replenish lost moisture.
When washing, gently work the shampoo through in a downward motion. And with tape-ins, never scrub or pile the hair on top of your head. This prevents matting and tangling.

Heat Damage from Styling Without Protection

Extensions can be styled with heat tools, but without proper protection, repeated heat exposure will cause the hair cuticle to lift, leading to frizz, dryness, and breakage over time. Since extensions can't repair themselves the way natural hair does, protecting them from heat is especially important.

Signs of heat damage:

  • Hair feels rough or coarse to the touch
  • Ends are split or frayed
  • Extensions won't hold a curl or style like they used to
  • Frizz that won't smooth down, even with product

What to do:

  1. Always apply a heat protectant. This is non-negotiable! Spritz or apply a heat protectant product to dry extensions before using any hot tool. Look for one that protects up to 450°F.
  2. Lower your heat settings. Extensions don't need as much heat as natural hair. Keep flat irons and curling wands between 250–300°F for best results.
  3. Give them a smoothing treatment. If damage has already occurred, try a keratin-based smoothing treatment or a bond-repair hair mask. These can help seal the cuticle and temporarily restore smoothness.
  4. Limit heat styling frequency. Give your extensions a break. Embrace air-drying or heatless styling methods a few days a week to reduce cumulative damage.
Let extensions air dry to about 80% before using any hot tools. Starting with slightly damp hair (not soaking wet) reduces the amount of heat stress the hair endures.

Dryness & Frizz

Because extensions are cut off from their natural moisture source (your scalp), they can become dry over time, especially with regular washing, styling, and environmental exposure. Dry extensions are more prone to frizz, tangling, and breakage.

Signs your extensions need moisture:

  • Hair looks dull and lacks shine
  • Extensions feel rough or straw-like
  • Frizz is hard to control, even in good weather
  • Hair absorbs product quickly without looking hydrated

What to do:

  1. Hydrating hair mask. Once every 2–4 weeks, apply a deeply hydrating hair mask to dry or slightly damp extensions. Focus on the mid-lengths and ends. Leave on for 10–20 minutes before rinsing thoroughly.
  2. Use a leave-in conditioner. After washing, apply a small amount of leave-in conditioner or hair serum to towel-dried extensions. This helps lock in moisture and keeps frizz at bay throughout the day.
  3. Try a hair oil. A few drops of lightweight hair serum or oil applied to dry extensions adds instant shine and smoothness. Apply sparingly to avoid a greasy look.
  4. Avoid alcohol-based products. Many hairsprays and styling products contain drying alcohols. Check ingredient lists and opt for alcohol-free formulas where possible.
Store your extensions in the Luxy Hair Carrier when not in use, away from sunlight and humidity. Proper storage goes a long way in preserving moisture and preventing unnecessary dryness.

Tangling & Matting

Tangles are one of the top complaints when it comes to extensions, and they're almost always preventable! Matting usually happens when extensions aren't properly detangled before styling, or washing, or when they're stored loosely without being brushed out first.

Signs of tangling or matting:

  • Extensions feel knotted near the weft or bonds
  • Hair doesn't brush through smoothly
  • Significant shedding when brushing
  • Extensions look "fluffy" or textured at the roots

What to do:

  1. Detangle before every wash. Gently brush extensions from ends to roots using a soft-bristle or loop brush before getting them wet. Wet tangles are much harder to remove.
  2. Braid before bed. If you wear clip-in extensions during the day, always remove them before sleeping. For tape-in extensions, braid or loosely tie hair before bed to minimize friction and tangling overnight.
  3. Use a detangling spray. If you encounter stubborn knots, spritz a detangling spray or apply a small amount of conditioner to the area and work gently with your fingers before using a brush.
  4. Brush the right way. Always start brushing from the ends, working your way up in sections. Never start from the roots as  this forces tangles downward and causes breakage.
  5. Store them properly. Brush extensions thoroughly, then store them in the Luxy Hair Carrier or in their original box between wears.
Use a Luxy Hair Loop Brush — it's specifically designed for extensions and won't pull or damage the hair the way a regular brush can.

The Full Revival Routine

If your extensions are in need of a full reset, follow this step-by-step revival routine to restore softness, shine, and manageability:

  1. Dry brush gently. Before getting extensions wet, use a loop brush to gently work through any tangles from ends to roots.
  2. Wash with a sulfate-free shampoo. Use cool or lukewarm water and work shampoo through in a downward motion. Avoid scrubbing or bunching the hair.
  3. Deep condition. Apply a rich moisturizing mask or conditioner from mid-shaft to ends. Leave on for 10–15 minutes, then rinse with cool water to seal the cuticle.
  4. Air dry or blow dry gently. Gently squeeze (don't rub) excess water out with a microfiber towel, then allow to air dry. If blow-drying, use a low heat setting with a diffuser.
  5. Apply a hair serum or oil. While extensions are slightly damp or fully dry, apply a light serum to restore shine and smoothness.
  6. Style with heat protectant. If you're using any hot tools, apply a heat protectant before styling.

Consistency is key! Following a regular, gentle care routine will keep your extensions looking their best between revival treatments.

When It's Time for a New Set

Luxy extensions last 5-6 months on average, but with proper care, can last up to a year or more. It all depends on how frequently you wear them! But if you've tried the revival routine and your extensions still feel rough, look overly dry, or have significant damage, it may be time for a fresh set. Extensions do have a natural lifespan, especially with regular heat and washing.
